N°18 - Le chemin de la transhumance

Transhumance consists of moving herds on foot from the valleys to the high mountains during the summer. This ancient practice allows herds to graze in the summer and cultivate the valley lands. An ancestral practice, transhumance has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage since 2023.

Transhumance consists of moving herds on foot from the valleys to the high mountains during the summer. This ancient practice allows herds to graze in the summer and cultivate the valley lands. An ancestral practice, transhumance has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage since 2023. With this hike, you will step back in time, following the footsteps of the many shepherds who used this route to reach the summer pastures of Pierre Saint-Martin. Today, this trail is still used in June and September by the herds from the Barétous Valley that move up and down to the summer pastures.

How to get there

From Oloron Sainte-Marie, head towards Arette. Once in the village, turn left opposite the church, and park in the Place des Jardins de Salet parking lot.
