Aksenty Ivanovich Poprishchin, a low-key civil servant in Saint Petersburg, struggles to find his place in the world: he lives alone with his maid Mavra, and his romantic pursuits and ambitions are thwarted by his clumsiness and absent-mindedness. He therefore invents a life for himself that is far more enviable, until he loses all touch with reality. An adaptation of the funniest and most touching of the Petersburg Stories for three performers: Poprishchin, his maid Mavra, and a pianist who accompanies this surprising descent into madness on stage with pieces by Prokofiev.
