Rosaura, a young, beautiful and wealthy Venetian widow, meets four suitors of different nationalities: Milord Runebif, English; Monsieur Le Blau, French; Don Alvaro de Castille, Spanish; and Count Bosco Nero, Italian. Each of them courts her, through the mischievous Harlequin.

But Rosaura is undecided. With the help of her lady-in-waiting Marionnette, she devises a stratagem to make her choice. But surprise, like love - especially in Venice - is always just around the corner...
