Récital de musique sacrée: Choeur Ascèse
Founded in the Basque Country in July 2013 by Philippe Mendes and composed of sixteen
professional singers, French and Spanish singers, the Ascèse Chamber Choir offers
a broad panorama of classical sacred and secular vocal music, spanning five
centuries up to the contemporary era.
Philippe Mendes conceived this emblematic program, bringing together works by
Italian composers (Giorgi, “Ave Maria”), Iberian composers (Duron, “Salve Regina,” and Esteves’
Magnificat), English (Byrd, *Ave Verum*, and Purcell, *Rejoice in the Lord Always*), and German
composers, featuring various works by Bach.
The choir, consisting here of twelve singers—performing a cappella or accompanied
by the organ—explores these complex and harmonious polyphonic works. Organ pieces round out the program.
