Belgium’s surrender in May 1940 caught heritage preservationists off guard. A masterpiece of European art, painted by Van Eyck for the cathedral in Ghent (Belgium), the Altarpiece of the Mystical Lamb, coveted by the Germans, had to be immediately moved to safety outside the country. It was at the Château de Pau that it unexpectedly found refuge (1940–1942).
An incredible story that sheds light not only on the looting of artworks during wartime but also on issues of conservation and restoration.
A lecture by Florence Saragoza, curator at the National Museum and Estate of the Château de Pau, for the Society of Friends of the Château de Pau
