Journées européennes de l'archéologie : Sites funéraires au col de Saoubathou
Heritage hike proposed by the Pays d?art et d?histoire Pyrénées béarnaises with Gérard Blasco.
Parking lot at north entrance to Bedous for car pooling.
The Col de Saoubathou is home to extraordinary funerary remains. There is no rock flow on this flat area, which means that the tons of stones forming the imposing elliptical dolmenic tumulus, 18 m long by 12 m wide and around 1 m high, had to be assembled one by one! The dolmen was destroyed and replaced by a much more recent hut, now in ruins. The block of pudding, a remnant of what was once the table covering the burial site, now reduced to its modest dimensions of 1 m x 0.50 x 0.50 m, raises questions about the difficulties involved in transporting it.
