Découverte géologique Au Rocher des Perdrix

To mark the Journées Nationales de la Géologie (National Geology Days), the CPIE Littoral Basque is offering a discovery walk on the Larrun Xoldokogaina massif in Biriatou.

Located to the north-west of the Rhune massif, the 5km circuit starts at the Larretxekoborda telephone relay parking lot, at an altitude of 200 m (map IGN-1/25000 Hendaye/Saint Jean de Luz). It will take us to the hill of Mont du Calvaire and then to the cliffs of Rocher des Perdrix, the highest point (360m) of our tour. We return via the GR10 (Banyuls-Hendaye), skirting the cliffs to return to the parking lot. This tour enables us to understand the detrital sandstone sedimentation of the Triassic period (250 Ma = Millions of years) and the more clayey Carboniferous period (330 Ma), and to envisage the sedimentary, tectonic and climatic events that define and separate these two crucial periods in the Earth's history.
