Conférence : "Etxea, la maison dans la culture basque"
Mr. Be%F1at Zintzo-Garmendia, a historian, will discuss the eminently central role of the home in the identity, social structure, and spirituality of the Basques. A professor of history and geography with a doctorate in the history of the Basque Country, Mr. Zintzo-Garmendia has devoted his work and anthropological research to Basque culture for over fifty years. He is the author of several reference works, including *History of Witchcraft in the Basque Country: The Pyres of Injustice* (Privat). His presentation will provide a better understanding of the dynastic attachment to the Etxe by analyzing the functioning of the absolute right of primogeniture and the often adventurous fate of younger sons. He will highlight the Etxe’s “sacred trilogy,” which inextricably links the home (daily life), the place in the church (community roots), and the family tomb (the memory of ancestors).
