Brass instruments have been part of the sacred repertoire since the Baroque era. Over the centuries, the genius of great composers such as Giovanni Gabrieli in Italy and Henry Purcell in England has given brass ensembles a new place alongside choirs. Eager to occupy the full volume of the church, they created echo effects and reliefs known as chori spezzati. Witness Bruckner's work, influenced by Renaissance and Baroque music, in which brass instruments sublimate vocal nuances. Or, more recently, John Rutter's Gloria, in which the influence of Gregorian chant is combined with that of Poulenc and Stravinsky.
