Crossing the Pyrenean foothills on the Véloroute 81 requires first of all following the Atlantic coast to the mouth of the Adour River; a godsend since the landscapes offered by this sample of the Basque coastline, from the cliffs of the Biarritz lighthouse to the golden sands of Anglet, are among the most beautiful to begin a bicycle trip. The mouth of the Adour River is a sudden change of course: let's head east along the river to the historic shopping town of Bayonne, where the architectural treasures are a great incentive to take a curious break. Cycling facilities are a great help in getting through the city and, again with the Adour River, the route takes in the surrounding countryside.
