Xantxo

An itinerary for hardy walkers, taking in an original loop on the Baigura mountain. After an invigorating ascent to the lookout point, the walk on a wilder slope, in search of the Col de Chancho and the Lapitze balconies, rounds off this visit to the Baigura magnificently.

After a straightforward start, the route flirts with a straight line to the summit of Baigura from the leisure centre. Since we're all in a hurry to enjoy the breathtaking panorama this iconic summit has to offer on a sunny day, what's the point in procrastinating after all? Make sure you gradually build up your strength, though, as the slope is steep and it would be a shame to run out of fuel on the final climb to the Pagazaharreta plateau. Having taken these precautions, the loop is an original option for discovering Mount Baigura: after this sporting preamble on the most-visited side, a beautiful and adventurous escape awaits you in the plunge towards the Chancho pass.

How to get there

From Hasparren, follow signs for Saint-Palais and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (D22). At Bonloc, leave the Saint-Palais road on your left and continue straight on towards Mendionde then Hélette (D22) for almost 8 km. At the traffic circle just before Hélette, turn right towards the Baigura leisure center (D119). Park 2.5 km further on, in a parking lot on the left of the road opposite the Baigura leisure park.
