Iturbide

Visiting the western sector of Mount Ursuia can be done from the Urcuray district, in the municipality of Hasparren. The hike is varied, combining the ascent through a long valley known for its springs, and a comfortable route on the mountainside, remarkable for its views.

A geological peculiarity linked to an underground fault has made Ursuia a special mountain, rightly nicknamed the "mountain of springs". Groundwater and other water systems find outlets in many corners of the mountain. In the first half of the hike, going up the valley of Lapeyreren on the itur bide (fountain path), you will notice the multiple manholes of a drinking water pipe; the work here collects the needs of the city of Bayonne! The valley is shaded, the mud sometimes spreads under the soles, but the walk is pleasant in this fresh and flowery corridor. Then, at the Iramalda pass, the scenery changes. The landscape changes to high meadows, moors and distant views of the Labourd peaks. At the edge of the paths, we can't resist a contemplative break, the panorama is simply sublime.

How to get there

From Hasparren, follow the signs for Cambo-les-Bains (D10) for 5 km, until you reach the Urcuray district. At the heart of the hamlet, turn left onto a street that leads to the church. The start of the hike is located between the fronton and the church (small parking lot), with another, larger parking lot indicated in the adjacent street.
