Château et Bidouze - Gaztelu & Bidosa

The itinerary salutes the memory of the river trade of yesteryear and follows the old towpath between the small ports of Bidache and Came. Without ever losing sight of the castle of Gramont, it rises on the hill and allows to dominate the agricultural plain of the Bidouze.

A tributary of the Adour river, the Bidouze, is now a guide to ensure the link between the communes of Bidache and Came. Beautiful stone houses, paved docks and towpaths, their small ports keep the memory of the once flourishing river trade. Along the river, the bucolic towpath draws curves in symbiosis with the meanders of the Bidouze. On its banks, it is frequent to see passerines, egrets or herons, but also, for a few years, many cyclists travelling on the V81, a large-scale itinerary that crosses the whole Pyrenean foothills, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. More modestly, at the port of Came, you will climb the nearby hill to enjoy the view of the fertile Bidouze valley, and then it will be time to return to the river, always within sight of the Château de Gramont.

How to get there

From exit 6 on the A64 (Peyrehorade exit), follow signs for Bidache. The D19 road leads down to the Bidouze valley. Just after the bridge over the river, at the foot of the Château de Gramont, there's a good parking area on the left, where the hike begins (picnic tables).
