La Forêt d'Orion

The Haute-Cize area is located in the Natura 2000 zone, which gives it an important role in the preservation of certain remarkable bird species. The diversity of the environment between the Pic d'Herrozate and the Orion forest, a vast dark beech wood encased in a narrow valley, makes it possible to fully enjoy some of the treasures of the Basque Country. In the forest, we will therefore look for the prestigious family of peaks, represented in particular by the white-backed woodpecker. There are not really any paths that allow you to fully enjoy this area, except for the one that links the village of Béhérobie and the Erozate pass, but this is on almost 700m of difference in altitude. However, there are a few forest trails in the forest.

How to get there

From Esterençuby, follow the signs for the sources of the Nive. As you go deeper into the forest, you can park and take forest tracks.
