La vague géante Belharra
During autumn and winter storms, off the Basque Corniche, the giant wave Belharra sometimes forms. This wave, as rare as it is immense, bears its name in reference to the rocky spur from which it was formed: the Belharra Perdun. Thanks to certain climatic conditions and a strong swell hitting this underwater spur, waves of 10 to 15 metres high form in the Basque Country!
This wave is only surfed by a handful of professional surfers. With Nazaré in Portugal and Mullaghore in Ireland, the Belharra surf spot produces the biggest waves in Europe and the world.
